The different theft crimes in Georgia

Georgia authorities takes theft crimes seriously and punish those convicted equally so. If you face charges, it’s important to understand the types of these crimes.

What is theft?

There are different types of theft crimes, but it’s important to understand the definition of the word. Theft is the act of taking property from another person with the intention of depriving them of it. Most people automatically think of robbery when thinking of theft crimes. However, there are many ways a person can face charges for this offense.

What are the types of theft crimes?

Depending on the value of the property stolen, theft can be categorized as either grand or petty. Petty theft occurs when the property taken has a value less than $500 to $1,000. Meanwhile, grand theft involves stolen property that has a value greater than $500 to $1,000. Petty theft is normally classified as a misdemeanor offense while grand theft can be classified as a felony.

Shoplifting is another common theft crime. It is committed when a person knowingly takes an item from a store without paying for it. Shoplifting involves concealing an item to remove it from the store so that the merchant is unaware of the offense.

Theft by deception and theft by conversion are two other examples of theft crimes. Theft by deception occurs when fraud is involved to deprive a victim of their property or money. For example, a person promises to provide a specific service to someone for a fee. The individual pays a fee, but the person never provides those promised services, leaving them out their money.

Theft by conversion occurs when a person is given funds to use for a specific purpose but uses them for their own benefit. For example, a grandmother gives cash to their grandchild to donate to charity. Instead, the grandchild goes on a shopping spree and buys hundreds of dollars worth of clothing.
